Into the White

Oren stepped confidently through the fargate and into the unknown. Wind swirled in a blizzard of white around him. His view was limited to less than one foot in front of his face, but something drew him inevitably forward. He had felt it ever since meeting Thomes. Like a lodestone compass, his mind had been ever pointing in this direction. There was nothing to do but put one foot in front of the other.

His thin linen clothing should have done little to keep off the cold, and yet strangely, there was no discomfort. His mind perceived that his body was in extreme sub-zero temperatures, but his skin was warm enough to send wisps of steam rising from his shoulders.

Soon his steps grew too numerous to count. Time began to stretch and compress. There were moments when one step lasted several minutes, and others when they skipped by almost instantly.

Where am I?

The swirling white became so thick, Oren had to hold a hand up in front of his face to make sure he could still see at all.

Despite the wind, his hair rested unmoving on his head, and his clothes were undisturbed. I can’t feel it at all, Oren thought, running his hands over his arms.

Having filled himself with kai, his body had become an oasis of calm amidst a whirlwind of frozen chaos.

As if in response to it, the environment began to reflect his sense of tranquility. The winds relented, and the snow and ice that had been swirling around him were carried off. White tundra stretched out in all directions, and a brilliant star shone like a diamond overhead.

What is this place?

Oren squinted ahead at a small black dot, resting on the horizon. He walked toward it, then stopped suddenly as it instantaneously grew into a large, flat square, mere inches from his face. Its height towered above, ending nearly two feet over his head. Deep within its glassy surface was an infinite expanse of glittering bars and spirals, slowly spinning in a cosmic ballet as they drifted away from each other. Galaxies, Oren thought with wonder. There are so many. Between them was blackness; an utter lack of light, and it was growing. Oren was entranced. He gazed into the depths of this seemingly endless field of light and dark.

He reached his hand toward the surface. It was cool to the touch, like a puddle of crystal clear rainwater. Ripples floated outward from his fingertips, refracting the light from surrounding galaxies.

A tiny speck of light zipped between two of them.

What was that? Oren thought, peering into the depths. Again, it zipped across the emptiness, stopping in each galaxy for only a brief moment before moving on to the next. Its speed was increasing. As it moved from one cluster of lights to the next, Oren began to see a pattern.

It’s getting closer.

It zipped between galaxies, like a child hopping on rocks across a river. A deep throbbing hum grew as it came closer, vibrating at the edge of Oren’s consciousness.
